Chapter 16

My cell door screeched open, jerking me awake. I had fallen asleep on the bench, and my back was cursing me for it. Every muscle in my body ached as I sat up.

The same agent who had taken Nate stood at the door, swinging the keys in her hand.

I looked over at Nate’s cell, but it was still empty.

“You’re free to go,” she said.

“Why?” Several bones in my back clicked as I stood up.

“Someone got your charges dropped. Friends in high places?”

I paused. Not really, although my mother had made charges disappear from time to time, but there was no way she could have found about this…was there?

My blood ran cold at the thought. When meathead had booked me in with the custody sergeant, they had taken a picture of my coven mark.

“Did you contact my coven?” I asked, in a tone an octave higher than I intended.

“Standard procedure. Let’s go, I haven’t got all night.”

All night? What time was it?

The agent led me out of the cells and up the stairwell, encouraging me through the door that opened up into that infernal waiting room. She shut the door behind me, her job apparently done. A different, bespectacled woman sat at the desk, tapping away at the computer.

My satchel was already sitting on the front desk, waiting for me. They had taken everything but my clothes and my earrings off me when they booked me in.

I grabbed my satchel and slung it over my shoulder, but the receptionist didn’t bat an eye.

Lena and Carnell were still here, tucked into a corner, deep in conversation. A glance at the wall clock had me balking: it was one am.

In my peripheral vision, someone who had been sitting close to the sliding doors, stood up. I homed in on them, my blood running cold when I realised who it was.

“Noah?” I said.

My twin brother wore a branded hoodie, a pair of tracksuit bottoms, and sneakers, and he hadn’t combed his hair, which meant I had dragged him away from his evening work-out.

“I don’t even know what to say to you.” Noah approached, hands stuffed into his hoodie pockets. “Assaulting a Nexus agent? Really?”

“Trust me, he deserved it. What are you doing here?”

“Picking you up. Nexus called our High Priestess and told them about the charges. You’d still have them if it wasn’t for Mum.”

My head pounded, and not just with the mild hangover I had earned from my earlier drinking session. Our mother was going to kill me.

“What’s gotten into you, lately?” Noah asked. “You’re not acting like yourself. The Rowan I know wouldn’t have done this.”

I snorted. The Rowan he knew died in a tomb in Aldworth two weeks ago.

I didn’t have an answer for him, at least, not one he would understand. Even if he eventually understood, the judgement it would take to get there wasn’t worth it.

“Come on,” he said. “You’re coming home with me.”

“No, I’m not.” I looked over his shoulder at Lena and Carnell, who approached behind him.
